Ok – someone’s gotta break the news…so here goes:
The new owners of The Pruneyard shopping center in Campbell will not renew El Burro’s lease, so our beloved awesome fix for Mexican food for the last 47 years will be closing. They hope to reopen in the Campbell area someday, but prices are high and there isn’t much space available. If necessary, and if posssible, they’re willing to move to a small place temporarily. So get over to El Burro for a last fix of that awesome salsa and rice (my fav there)!
I ate there Monday, and I spoke with the grandson of Mario (who opened El Burro), and the grandson says he’s motivated to reopen El Burro, and won’t accept that it may never reopen.
Even though they’d planned on staying open until mid-June, today, Wednesday, May 16 is their last day open, according to family of the owners. They can’t staff the place anymore (employees have been leaving to find new jobs).
Luna Mexican Kitchen is moving in to that space, along with two other businesses, so I hear. While I’ll miss El Burro, I wish the new owners of The Pruneyard well, and I’ll be checking out the new businesses.
I’m born and raised in San Jose and my parents took me to El Burro every few weeks for many years! Love me some El Burro for their chairs, tables, tostadas, enchiladas, salsa, rice…well, everything!
