- The Wall Street Journal reports that Facebook and Alphabet’s Google have a policy stating employees can ask out a coworker just once.
- An ambiguous response counts as a “no.
There’s been much discussion on Facebook and Google’s dating policy. The tech website Gizmodo thought the policy “seemed extremely reasonable”, meanwhile far-right news outlet Breitbart called the policies “dystopian”. The problem is pretty basic. You work in close proximity with someone you share a common interest with on a daily basis and it’s easy to get caught up in each other. So rather that strictly prohibiting-which I don’t think you can do anyway-Facebook and Google are saying it’s better to have some guidelines as to what is acceptable and what is not. Bottom line, be aware that the coworker you date and whom you might later break up with, will still work at the same place you do. My experience with dating coworkers is that it’s never a good idea, and I now always stick to the adage “don’t fish off the company pier”
