It didn’t take long for Patrick Marleau to impress with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
In his first game with his new team Marleau scored 8:32 into the second period to give the Maple Leafs a 4-0 lead over the Winnipeg Jets. He also added second goal 36 seconds into the third period. For those keeping track, that would be career NHL career goals number 509 and 510-the first 508 goals coming with the 17 seasons spent with the San Jose Sharks.
Marleau also played his 1,500th regular season game in the NHL, just the 18th player in league history to reach this milestone, prompting Canadian fans to wonder if he can catch and surpass Gordie Howe’s all-time record of 1,739 games.
Since Marleau signed with Toronto, he has been call upon by Coach Mike Babcock to provide veteran leadership to a young Toronto team. He has delivered just that, scoring 4 goals –including his 99th NHL game-winning goal against the Kings, helping to move the Maple Leafs record to 7-2-0.
Patrick Marleau makes his first visit to the Shark Tank this Monday night with his new team. . I’m sure it will be a bitter sweet moment for many Sharks fans and there will be plenty of number 12 Jerseys in the stands. But you can’t blame the guy for moving on. Toronto offered him a 3 year, $18.75 million contract and the Sharks had reportedly offered a two-year contract worth roughly $10 million, but the team was unwilling to add a third year, forcing the 37-year-old to make a decision. A decision that so far looks good for both Patrick and his new team.
