On Thursday California Governor Gavin Newsom ordered a Statewide order for people to stay at home. Only allowing essential businesses to be operational. The order went into effect the evening of his press conference.
The State Governor is confident that the people of California will abide by this order and do the right thing.
The Governor mentioned how he would enforce this order by saying “There is a social contract here, People I think will recognize the need to do more and to meet this moment.”
Newsoms reason for declaring this order is due to the data on the spread of the virus. The Governor estimates 56% of the residents in California will contract the virus. However he states that it should not be too alarming due to many people not demonstrating symptoms.
The state’s data shows that 20% of those who contract the virus would have to be hospitalize. It is about 19,543 people who would need urgent medical care which is above the states existing capacity.
The Governors goal is to bend the curve and reduce the surge of 10,000 extra beds to be needed for the treatment of of California residents.
As of now the state has managed to secure Seton Medical Center in Daly City and are planning to secure another hospital in southern California bringing in a total 750 beds as of now.
Newsom says “I believe we have the capacity to meet this moment but not unless we change our behaviors and do what is necessary to meet this moment. Lets bend the curve together.”
California is the first state to declare this order.
