Don’t believe the hype about how people must move away from San Jose. Our average rent? Don’t believe it–it includes big houses. In San Jose, rents for one and two bedroom places start at about $2000-$2500. That’s about $1000 more than in the areas people love to brag about: Colorado, Oregon, Washington, Portland, etc.
Let’s say then that rents are $10,000-$15,000 more per year. Let’s all admit that gas is another $1000/yr. more and everything else is about the same (movies, groceries, etc.). Heating and cooling? Less (because California’s weather is better).
Now we get to salaries. If a couple makes $100,000 together in Colorado, Nevada or Texas, for example, they’ll generally make $140,000 here. Even if it’s $125,000, that’s enough to cover the difference in rent and gas with some left over.
What people want is a boat, an RV, and a house with a “nice” or “big” yard, garage, etc. They want to travel, eat out and go to movies and concerts. Don’t blame all that on San Jose being too expensive. Many salaries are considerably higher here in Silicon Valley–so much so that they more than cover the higher costs of housing and gas.
And, we have the Sharks!
Now that you now are better able to process the hype objectively, here’s an article that demonstrates it:
